It has begun.

We are in the midst of our first true snow of the season.

We had some flirtatious snow over the weekend.  You know, the kind where it snows a little and there is even a dusting on the ground but then it melts by day’s end.

But now it’s really happening.  Oldest Boy just told me that all the bike ruts on the driveway are being filled in.

So it’s official, I guess.

It’s funny because with this snow, we know it will be around until next April, most likely.  It won’t melt until then.

None of it.

This same snow that is on our ground right now will sit there all winter, being the base for maybe 2 feet of snow when it is all over and Spring comes back around.

The winter here is cozy and sleepy and warm and nostalgic (and I’m referring to being INSIDE when I say these things.)

And even though the children are excited and snow pants are right now hanging to dry in the entryway and chili is heating slowly on the stove because chili is a snowy-day kind of supper, I know that, come January, we’ll all be sick of the cold and snow and dark and putting-on-32-layers-of-clothes-just-to-walk-to-the-barn.

But now, at the very beginning, it’s nice.

In a I’m-from-SC-where-it-doesn’t-snow-much kind of way.

Yep, the first is usually the best and most exciting in a lot of things in life here on Earth; I’m not thinking it will be that way in Heaven though. I think every time will be even more exciting than the last.
